Some families explore a nanny share, where two families split one nanny’s hours and cost. It can reduce expense, but it needs both families to agree in advance on scheduling, sick days, holidays and whose home is used.

Define the position before you search

Nanny roles vary widely, and mismatched expectations are the most common reason a placement fails. Write the role down in detail first.

• Exact weekly schedule, including any evening or weekend hours.
• Whether the role includes driving, and who provides the vehicle and insurance.
• Which household tasks are genuinely part of the job, stated explicitly.
• Language requirements, if a second language matters to your family.
• Paid time off, statutory holidays, and how sick days will be handled.
• Whether the role is expected to grow as your children start school.

You are the employer

Unless a separate written arrangement says otherwise, your family hires the nanny directly. That means your family is the employer and is responsible for meeting the applicable employment standards, payroll and tax obligations that apply in Alberta.
